Dear John,

Today, 1 in 7 people in U.S. prisons are serving life sentences. That is over 200,000 people who have been robbed of the opportunity to support their families, contribute to their communities, and demonstrate the positive changes they have made in their lives. These people deserve a second chance.

Let me share just one example of how your gift can and will make a difference:

One year ago, William “Bill” Underwood was serving a life without parole sentence. He had spent half of his life in prison—mentoring younger men and creating a culture of responsibility in his prison community. Throughout his term, he remained a devoted father and life-long learner, taking every opportunity to grow as an individual and community member.

In January, after 33 long years, Bill was granted compassionate release, and his extreme sentence was finally over.

Today, he’s a Senior Fellow for The Sentencing Project’s Campaign to End Life Imprisonment where he urges leaders to support legislation that can create a more fair and compassionate justice system.

You can help end needlessly harsh sentences that have led to mass incarceration with your year-end gift of $15 today.

From now through #GivingTuesday, November 30, you can triple your impact. All donations received will be matched 2:1 by the Greenbridge Foundation up to $25,000. Help us earn this match today and invest in thriving communities over extreme punishment.
