When I step into a CDF Freedom Schools® program classroom, I feel Black joy in every read aloud, see it in every cheer and chant, observe it in every interaction that the caring staff have with the young “scholars.” Black children are allowed to be themselves, to be silly, to be joyful, and the site staff find the inherent joy in what each child brings—and that is why I put so much of myself into the job of sustaining the program for years to come.
