Team, Last week, President Biden announced plans to block new oil and gas leases within 10 miles of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, one of the oldest and most culturally significant Native American sites. This is an incredibly powerful moment, team: Not only does it demonstrate Democrats’ commitment to protecting our environment, but it also shows that during Native American Heritage Month, our government is making an effort to reevaluate policies that have done harm to indigenous communities across the U.S. We wholly support President Biden using the full power of the executive branch to address the climate crisis and social injustice. Will you sign our petition and let President Biden know that you too support these efforts?
Republicans, beholden to the oil and gas industry, were not happy calling it a “war on American energy” and as expected, chose climate denialism and ignorance about injustices against Native Americans. When you elected President Biden, you chose someone who does not ignore injustice. When forming his cabinet, he chose Deb Haaland to lead the Department of Interior, the country’s first Native American cabinet member. And in October, the White House restored protections to three national monuments that were opened to mining and drilling by the Trump administration. Future Forum HQ
