John, this weekend is Small Business Saturday, a day to shop small, invest in your community, and make a difference on the local level.

Here at Common Cause, we know that change starts with individuals working together in our communities. And, we know that small, local businesses can be a powerful force for that change -- and a voice that legislators don’t want to ignore.

That’s why we’ve worked with small businesses around the country to advocate for the Freedom to Vote Act, a vital piece of legislation that would increase voter protections and ensure our democracy represents all Americans.

Working with Business Forward, over 1500 small business owners have met with senators, written letters to their local papers, and signed onto declarations in support of protecting and improving democracy.

Check out some of our favorites below:

  • In Arizona, we gathered 500 small businesses to sign onto a letter to Senator Sinema, asking her to sign onto voting-rights legislation.

  • In Georgia, over 150 small businesses signed our letter to Senators Warnock and Ossoff asking them to support the For the People Act.

  • In Maine, we organized 100 small businesses and organizations to ask Senator Collins to continue the state’s strong tradition of democracy by supporting voting-rights protections.

  • In Alaska, small businesses and non-profits throughout the state joined us in writing to the state’s congressional delegation, asking them to support voting-rights legislation.

  • And nationally, with our partner Business Forward, 790 business leaders signed a statement asking their representatives to protect American democracy by passing the Freedom to Vote Act.

The Freedom to Vote Act would stop common voter-suppression tactics, bringing national standards to elections for the first time. Partisan gerrymandering would finally be a thing of the past, as states would use proven solutions to draw fair, representative maps for our communities. Our elections would be secured against foreign interference and big secret money, allowing small businesses and every American to participate on a fair playing field.

The small businesses we’ve organized with know the value of looking out for your neighbor, which is why they strongly support this legislation. This Small Business Saturday, we thank them for standing up for democracy.

Thanks for all that you do,
