Happy Halloween! Although many of us believe that witches, ghosts, and goblins are the spookiest things out there, we know something even spookier--upcoming SCOTUS cases. That’s right, SCOTUS will be deciding on a few landmark cases that could have ghastly outcomes for our communities.

On October 8th, SCOTUS heard three cases surrounding anti-discrimination employment rights for LGBTQ+ folks. We know that LGBTQ+ people are already marginalized and face some of the highest rates of unemployment, homelessness, and violence. If SCOTUS decides it’s okay to fight folks because they are LGBTQ, we as a community will suffer.

Louisiana’s medically unnecessary clinic shutdown law is also now in the hands of the Supreme Court. URGE worked on an almost identical case in Texas in 2016. During Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, SCOTUS ruled that the state could not place restrictions on clinics that create an undue burden for folks seeking abortion. Yet, Louisiana anti-abortion legislators are still attempting to create abortion bans. We know who suffers most from abortion bans: young people, black and brown folks, LGBTQ+ folks and low-income folks. 

Talk about scary!

That's why it's important for Congress to pass legislation that ensures our communities are able to thrive and access the care we need free from discrimination.
