Weekend Reading
Dear John,
We all deserve to live in communities with fully funded social services and just, sustainable economies. The Build Back Better bill would help move us closer to this goal. The House passed the bill, which would extend the child tax credit, reduce greenhouse emissions, and more. Please join us in urging the Senate to pass the bill and add a path to citizenship for immigrants. Tell the Senate: Pass a robust reconciliation package! [link removed]
Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:
Building peace and livelihoods in Zimbabwe: [link removed] Repeated incidents of political violence have heightened polarization and mistrust among communities in Zimbabwe. Jobs were hard to come by, too. An AFSC-supported project has made a difference on both counts. “I was surprised to see even those who used to be my enemies present in the first workshop,” said one 33-year-old mother of three. She is one of many showing the courage and resilience of communities coming together in challenging times.
West Virginians share what Build Back Better means to them: [link removed] Some families have used the child tax credit to pay outstanding medical expenses. Others have fixed the family vehicle or used it to put food on the table. In West Virginia, community members are sharing their stories. It's all part of a campaign to persuade Sen. Joe Manchin to support the Build Back Better bill.
U.N. Day in Solidarity with the Palestinian People (Nov. 29, 9 a.m. PT/12 p.m. ET/7 p.m. Palestine): [link removed] Last month, Israel declared key Palestinian human rights and civil society groups “terrorist organizations.” AFSC’s partner in the No Way to Treat a Child campaign, Defense for Children International-Palestine, is one of the groups criminalized by this effort to silence critical work. AFSC and partners will discuss recent developments in a special Facebook Live event. Join us to learn more.
A Quaker immigration divestment list: [link removed] Socially responsible investors have long turned to AFSC's Investigate project [link removed] for key information. AFSC’s Noam Perry recently spoke with Financial Planning about our new divestment list for immigrant justice. “We have two main audiences. We have investors or investment professionals, and we have social justice campaigns that we work with,” he shares. (Financial Planning)
Your gift matched for #GivingTuesday: [link removed] Support our work for a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world this #GivingTuesday. A generous donor will match your gift, up to $50,000! We’re opening this opportunity up early for loyal AFSC supporters like you!
Thank you for your support!: [link removed] From California to Indonesia, AFSC community members have come together time and time again to overcome violence, poverty, and oppression. We hope you enjoy this video sharing just a few examples of what supporters like you have helped make possible this year.
Be well and take care
