We’re going to keep it short this week, but we did want to turn your attention to what’s looking like an important day––December 3.
Here’s why: December 3 is the deadline to pass legislation to continue funding the government, or the government will enter a shutdown on December 4. Congress is broken, and failed to follow its own budgeting and appropriations process on time in 2021. So in September, Congress agreed to a short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) that funded the government through December 3.
Something to be thankful for in a CR: The silver lining is the current CR (and a possible future one extending past December 3) maintains Trump-era policy priorities and funding levels. One example—a CR maintains the Hyde Amendment to protect unborn children by prohibiting taxpayer dollars from funding abortions.
If Democrats managed to get their act together and actually work out a new budget, they’d use it as yet another opportunity to radically transform America.
As Congress works on a deal to fund the government, there are two related spending issues that are inherently part of the conversation:
- The Biden agenda is not cheap and we don’t have the money to pay for it. Congress will need to pass a long term debt limit increase by December 15, or the federal government will not be able to meet its obligations—the government could begin defaulting on its debt.
- Senate Democrats will be working to pass the multi-trillion dollar Build Back Broke bill (which the House passed one week ago). The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates this bill would add at least another $367 billion to the national debt. The negotiations around this bill will also affect negotiations over the debt limit and the funding of the federal government.
It’s not just the spending levels in the Build Back Broke bill that are scary—this bill literally has Bernie Sanders’s and AOC’s entire progressive agenda. From amnesty for illegal immigrants to 80,000 new IRS agents to target and harass American citizens.
It contains the Green New Deal. It expands cradle-to-grave socialism.
And hypocritically, the bill even breaks a fundamental promise of Biden’s campaign, by giving ‘coastal elites’ who live in failing states a blue-state bailout through the tax code.
That’s right, Democrats are making life harder for middle America while simultaneously handing a major tax carve out to their millionaire donors in blue states like California, New York, and New Jersey.
