John,
Today is Native American Heritage Day, a national holiday that honors the history and culture of the first residents of the land we now call the United States.
On this special day, I encourage New Mexicans to join me in reflecting on Indigenous history and honoring the enduring legacy of Indigenous communities.
As governor, I am deeply committed to consulting and collaborating with the 23 Indigenous nations, tribes, and pueblos living in New Mexico, all of which contribute so much to our state's beautiful multicultural identity.
I promise to keep working to right the wrongs of past generations by respecting the sovereignty of Indigenous nations, supporting the well-being of Indigenous communities, and lifting the voices of Indigenous people wherever I can.
Our nation's past is not easy to reckon with – it includes devastating pain and suffering for Indigenous communities – but I hope in teaching the next generation of leaders about our most grave injustices and the indelible contributions made by Indigenous peoples to this country and this state, we can work toward a brighter future for us all.
Sincerely,
Michelle Lujan Grisham
