White House with hundreds of activists standing in front of it with Voting Rights Now signs.

During our series of direct actions for voting rights this fall, nearly 300 civil rights advocates were arrested at the White House. Our numbers included people from their early teens into their late seventies, faith leaders, elected officials from all over the country, labor leaders, women’s rights advocates, environmental advocates, racial justice activists, LGBTQ+ activists, and more.

We did it for one reason: because we believe the President of the United States has an obligation to do everything in his power to protect voting rights from the worst assaults we have seen in 60 years. We still believe that today. And we’re optimistic that largely because of our efforts, this goal is within reach.

Norman Lear sitting in front of a wall of pictures.

As we near the end of People For the American Way’s 40th year of fighting for equality and justice for all, co-founder Norman Lear reflects on our origins. A television ad and conversations among Lear, the late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, and Father Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., were what started it all.

“I could not be more grateful for your interest in People For the American Way,” says Lear, “which is another way of expressing interest for the American Promise.” Make sure to watch his full message to members!

A picture of Lady Justice with scales in front of law books. Up next in the courts.

Cases percolating in the federal courts this month show just how extreme the judiciary has become under the influence of far-right judges. They also remind us of why we are fighting so hard to repair the damage by getting outstanding Biden nominees confirmed.

Abortion care and COVID-19 are two issue areas in which we’re currently seeing what happens when the judicial system doesn’t protect us the way it’s supposed to. Read on for what will be coming up next in our courts!

Lessons learned from Virginia's elections. A picture of the VA Capitol in Richmond.

Every election is complicated. There is no single explanation for Republican Glenn Youngkin’s upset victory in Virginia this month. But there are plenty of warning signs. We can’t let the 2022 elections be dominated by bogus culture war issues drummed up by right-wing politicians.

If too many voters fall for the Far Right’s cynical culture war campaigns – or too many of us stay away out of frustration – we will give more power to the same politicians who are devising new ways to keep Black people away from the ballot box and leave us underrepresented in the halls of power. Read on for People For President Ben Jealous’s op-ed on the lessons we must learn from Virginia’s election results.

Racism, the Right Wing, and Schools. A picture of empty desks and a chalk board in a classroom.

Our Right Wing Watch team has been hard at work this month tracking the threads of misinformation that the Far Right is using to manipulate the public and rile up their base. One of the most common threads is the right-wing campaign against the teaching of so-called “critical race theory” in K-12 schools, a tactic designed to enable fearmongering about race across political lines.

From Virginia to North Dakota, Right Wing Watch has tracked a number of key ways that this narrative has infiltrated not only right-wing media, but also has become a political football in schools across the country. Read on for what you need to know about the Right’s attacks on the teaching of American history as we move towards the next critical election cycle!
