Dear John
It is time for this Government to take
responsibility.
The shocking loss of life that we
saw this week after a group of refugees attempted to cross the channel
was not just incredibly tragic. It was
preventable.
Confronted with an undeniably
harrowing story, this Government has chosen to blame France for
allowing the crossings, while failing to shoulder any
of the responsibility.
But the UK Government needs to stop
political point-scoring and recognise that a catastrophe like this was
made inevitable by its own policy. They have systematically closed off
safe routes of asylum. They have done everything in their power to
make channel crossings more difficult. But people still
come, not to take advantage of British taxpayers, but because of what
they’re fleeing from.
Instead of closing our doors, we
need to open them. We must accept our moral obligations to adhere to
international law.
John,
will you contact your MP today to make clear you support the rights of
refugees and that you want your government to be compassionate and
open to the world?
Priti Patel’s Nationality &
Borders Bill will further entrench danger in the
process of seeking asylum.
The bill will make it harder for people to safely seek asylum in the
UK and will criminalise the basic act of seeking asylum, placing
penalties on those who enter the country by irregular means. Also
criminalised will be those who assist asylum seekers for purely
altruistic reasons.
Will you send a message to your MP
to challenge this bill and the Government’s stance on refugees? You
can use our quick and easy Hey-MP tool to either craft a social media
message or email to them.
We must ensure that this
country upholds its responsibilities and does the right
thing.
Best wishes,
Naomi Smith
