Raising Awareness of PAD on the Hill
On October 30, WomenHeart hosted a briefing on Capitol Hill to raise awareness of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and its impact on women and African Americans. Representative Donald Payne, Jr. (D-NJ), WomenHeart Champion Pamela Parker and others spoke about the need to eliminate barriers to information and screening and to address disparities in diagnosis and care. Gender Disparities in Heart Valve Disease Dr. Rachel Bond, Medical Director of Women’s Heart Health at Dignity Health East Valey, and NHA member, guest authored "Treating women with heart valve disease," a blog about WomenHeart's work to address gender disparities in the care and treatment of women with heart valve disease. The blog also draws attention to the burden of disease for women of color, who are less likely to have access to cutting edge treatment options. Read her blog.

Heart Failure Facebook Live Series
On October 14, 2019, WomenHeart, in partnership with the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses (AAHFN), broadcast its third Facebook Live event in a three-part series on heart failure. Focused on “seven strategies for thriving with heart failure,” the event was broadcast from the Mayo Clinic and featured provider experts and WomenHeart Champion Brandie Taylor. New Class of Champions Completes Training at Mayo Clinic
WomenHeart hosted its 18th annual Science & Leadership Symposium October 11-13 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. The new champions came well prepared and left eager to be our boots on the ground. In fact, they have already kicked off peer-to-peer fundraisers in support of WomenHeart with a class goal of raising $10,000. The tireless leadership of Dr. Sharonne Hayes, the staff at Mayo Clinic and our District Leaders in attendance made this weekend possible.

Addressing Native American Women’s Heart Health
In order to address the impact of heart disease on Native American women, WomenHeart partnered with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at NIH late last year to host a convening of researchers, health care providers, advocates and patients – including WomenHeart Champion Brandie Taylor. We shared stories and knowledge and discussed ways of working together to address this challenge. Read the summary of our meeting, recently posted on the NHLBI website.
