Dear John
I wondered if you’d seen Naomi’s
email earlier this week about writing to the editor of your local
paper to voice your concerns at this Government’s blatant contempt for
the people of this country?
If you haven’t yet written a
letter, I wondered if you would consider sending one
today? I firmly believe that
the best way to put pressure on this Government is to keep alive the
conversations about the subjects that make it
uncomfortable.
The sleaze scandal has rocked
Britain, but the liberties MPs have taken with second jobs and deals
with their mates are worrying more for what they
indicate about our democracy.
A political system rife with
corruption is not a democratic one. Where parliamentarians can get
away with all manner of things, they are not being held accountable.
We know that this is what the Government wants. Bills it is currently
pushing through parliament such as the Elections Bill and the Police,
Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill take away power from ordinary people
and concentrate it in the hands of our Government.
So, will you send a letter to the
editor of your local paper raising these concerns? You can usually
find the email address for your local paper’s letters page on their
website and printed in the paper itself.
Here is the letter I hope you’ll
send:
Dear
I am extremely concerned by the
MP sleaze scandals of recent weeks. I simply don’t believe these
issues exist in a bubble.
When politicians openly and
knowingly fail their constituents, this is a symptom of something far
more rotten at the heart of our political system. I’ve been following
Best for Britain’s work on the Government’s anti-democratic agenda.
Several bills are passing through parliament at the moment which
threaten to undermine our democracy.
The Elections Bill will remove
the independence of the Electoral Commission and undermine its ability
to monitor elections. Other bills, such as the Police, Crime,
Sentencing and Courts Bill and the Judicial Review and Courts Bill all
take power out of the hands of ordinary people and our democratic
institutions and concentrate it in the hands of the
Government.
The fact that this Government
is so happy to take liberties with public trust is, I fear, a sad sign
that this Government is already preparing for a future where it cannot
be held accountable.
Best wishes,
Will you send a letter? Let us
know:
Best wishes,
