Yesterday, the German coalition presented a draft coalition agreement, which included another major breakthrough for the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW):  the future governing parties of Germany plan to take part in the first meeting of states parties (MSP) of the TPNW as observers!

This comes just weeks after Norway became the first NATO member state to announce its intention to observe the MSP, and is particularly significant because Germany is also the first of the five European states to host US nuclear weapons to end its explicit opposition to the treaty. In fact, the draft agreement explicitly states the goal of a "Germany free of nuclear weapons".



This decision is a huge win for ICAN, ICAN Germany and the network of local partner organisations who campaigned all throughout the elections and the coalition negotiations. It would not have happened without them. Now, we must make this decision have an impact, both in Germany and abroad.



Internationally, this announcement will help us encourage more NATO states to follow Norway and Germany’s example – or even better, to directly sign and ratify the treaty. In Germany, on the other hand, campaigners now have the chance to change the debate on the importance of nuclear weapons in Germany, and its role as a host state. Do you want to contribute to our work so we can keep pushing for changes like this?
