John,
Growing up in the Fillmore, I could
always tell Thanksgiving was around the corner. For me, it meant
helping my grandmother do the shopping for the amazing meal she
prepared, and watching the two top high school football teams battle
it out at Turkey Day for the championship. (Usually Galileo
won!) But it was more
than just the delicious food and the day off school, it was a time our
neighborhood came together in gratitude for each
other.
While so much has changed since then, the spirit of
Thanksgiving is something that even time can’t diminish. San Francisco is unified in our will to
recover and to thrive once again. This past week, I spent time in our
communities providing turkeys that would complete family meals across
the City. We have come a long way since this time last year - but we
have a ways to go.
I am thankful that we continue to have some
of the highest vaccination rates in the country, and thankful that we
have saved thousands of lives through our innate understanding that
each one of us plays a role in keeping each other safe and
healthy.
San Franciscans are resilient. We
are hopeful. And we are determined. It’s that determination that I
know will lift us out of the challenges of the past year and allow us
to emerge stronger than before.
As you start the Thanksgiving
holiday celebrating with friends, family, and friends we call family,
I want to thank you for your enduring friendship
and support. I couldn’t do this work without it.
Sincerely,
Mayor London Breed
