Consider making a gift to Peace Over Violence

Dear Friend,

This year POV is celebrating FIFTY YEARS of social change, social service, and social justice. From a grassroots organization to a nationally recognized leader on violence prevention and intervention, POV has seen much growth and built a strong legacy. Next week we are launching our year end campaign, all about celebrating our long and strong fifty year history. Stay tuned; all month we’ll be highlighting our accomplishments throughout the last five decades and asking you: where do we go from here?

Former POV Managing Attorney

"As I look back on all that we, as a community of member leaders have accomplished, I can’t be prouder. 50 years of serving the community and making it stronger. None of this would have been possible but for an amazing team of hardworking professionals and nurturers at Peace Over Violence. Peace Over Violence has been an extremely important part of my life where I started as an intern in 2015 and with nurturing and guidance became the Managing Attorney of the Legal Program.

I was supported in my journey and trusted with incredible opportunities to learn, make space and expand my horizons. To give an example, I was given an opportunity to participate at the Women in Policy Fellowship for the Women’s California foundation, where I got an incredible opportunity to work on two state bills: AB 865: Mandatory CSEC training for Resource families and SB 493: Gender Equity in Education: Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence, a bill that will protect California students’ civil rights, which now became law. This would not have been possible without the mentorship and guidance I was provided with an intent to make a difference for the people we serve.

Today, as the Managing Attorney at Tahirih Justice Center, I work to serve immigrants of gender-based violence and I am able to pass on the learnings and values that Peace Over Violence imparted upon me. I owe a priceless debt of gratitude to the phenomenal professional team that contributed to my growth as a leader in my profession.

Getting to know the talented, dedicated, creative and committed POV team has been one of the highlights of my professional career, and will always hold a special place in my heart.

** Coming Up: Counselor Advocate Training
------------------------------------------------------------

Our next Counselor Advocate Training will start in January. We encourage caring and compassionate individuals from the diverse communities of LA County to become trauma informed Counselor Advocates working directly with survivors of sexual and domestic violence.

Upon completion of the training, graduates will be part of the POV Intervention Division’s Emergency Response Team, volunteering for either of the following programs: 24-Hour Hotline and Emergency Response Team or Domestic Abuse Response Team. ** Event Highlight: Dia de los Muertos
------------------------------------------------------------
As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Students Together Organizing Peace (STOP) Club members at Miguel Contreras Learning Complex created an altar at their school in observance of Dia de los Muertos. A traditional holiday celebrated in North and Central America to honor the dead, STOP Club members created their altar to commemorate the lives of victims of domestic violence. In addition to featuring tributes to victims, the students also included statistics on domestic violence and resources for those in need of support.

** Program Highlight: Women’s Empowerment Self Defense
------------------------------------------------------------
We recently started holding in person self defense classes again! Self defense was one of the original programs at POV and is still going strong today, fifty years later. Empowerment Self Defense helps individuals develop easy-to-use techniques such as awareness, assertiveness, and verbal confrontation skills in combination with safety strategies and physical techniques to prevent, resist, and escape violent assaults.

After our first in person classes a few weeks ago, participants were eager to share their feedback:

** “POV’s self-defense class was wonderful! The instructors are very helpful and informative about self-defense tactics and the class is a great environment to be in. The class teaches you techniques that are very useful and maybe even life-saving if you find yourself in a dangerous situation. I will definitely remember what I have learned in this class for the rest of my life.”
– Rea

** “Thank you for having this class, I am walking away with a sense of empowerment. I had a great time in the class- love the energy!”

For many Americans, the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse on all charges on Friday was a vindication of an innocent, if not heroic, teenager with good intentions. For others, it was a brutal disappointment, further evidence that the courts give white men a pass for their actions.
