Ambition, Hope, and Action: Reflections from COP26

The message from the recent UN Climate Change Summit (COP26) was clear: This may be our last best decade to stop catastrophic climate change and achieve a sustainable future for all and not just the few. California has an outsized voice in international discussions about climate change. We can provide a clear example that economic growth and cuts in carbon emissions can happen simultaneously. We have the solutions to the climate crisis, we just need the political will to implement them.

House Passes Build Back Better Act

The Build Back Better Act is “the single largest investment in fighting the climate crisis that our country has ever made.” It will address wildfires, droughts, and the lack of clean and safe drinking water in California, incentivize our transition to clean energy, and invest in communities hit hardest by the climate crisis and environmental racism.

Did You Know? Over 2 Million Californians Live Near an Active Oil or Gas Site

That so many Californians live dangerously close to an active oil or gas well is an urgent public health crisis, one that disproportionately impacts residents who live in low-income or Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities. Fortunately, Governor Newsom instructed the state entity that regulates oil and gas to establish rules to protect us from impacts of oil and gas extraction. The climate crisis is here and we believe this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but is lacking the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. California Environmental Voters (formerly CLCV) exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
