John -- Thanksgiving is a good time to stop, reflect, and consider the work we have accomplished throughout the year as we come closer to the end of another year. Each of us came to Brand New Congress to make a lasting and powerful impact on our political system that affects the lives of so many. It can become a grind, and sometimes you can lose sight of the goal. A young volunteer, Georgina, who recently joined us reminded us why this work is so important. She wrote an essay that we thought was pretty special, and we wanted to share it with you.
From her essay, "Owning my power," 14-year-old Georgina writes:
"Our future and present is at risk because we aren’t caring and taking action on climate change. Climate change is here, it’s at our front doors. We need to open our eyes and look at all the storms that have happened, all the families whose houses have been knocked down. Let’s start caring NOW or else we will keep losing lives to something we can prevent."
This is why we fight, John. To give Georgina the future she deserves. To give all the generations that follow us a livable planet. To dismantle the systems that oppress Black and Brown bodies, deny us opportunities, justice -- and a future.
And Georgina has big plans for her future.
"All I dream about is Congress. I wake up and go to sleep thinking about Congress, I dream about what I can do to help make sure the working class and middle class families aren’t left behind, how I can lift childhood poverty, how I can make sure kids have an opportunity for success."
As a fellow Texan, I share Georgina’s passion and desire for our great state -- and our entire nation. Owing our power is what fuels our movement of change and progress.
I encourage you to read Georgina's full essay on our website: I hope you and your loved ones enjoy this holiday weekend. Cherish your time together.
And know that I am grateful for each of you. Thank you for your support of Brand New Congress and for partnering with us to build a world for young people like Georgina.
Thankful,
Adrienne Bell
