Dear John,
Next week, Senator Ted Cruz will push the Senate to vote on an amendment to pre-authorize war with Iran. He must be stopped.
According to Roll Call [[link removed]] :
"Texas Republican Ted Cruz has introduced an amendment that says that the 2002 AUMF [Authorization for the Use of Military Force] is not needed for the president to use force against Iran.”
This amendment supports the Trump administration’s disastrous legal rationale that a President can launch military strikes on Iran without Congressional approval or oversight. Make no mistake, Ted Cruz and his allies are seeking to remove one of the most vital checks and balances we have to stop war.
NIAC continues to warn that there is no good “plan B” for diplomacy that does not involve bombs, missiles, or death. Meanwhile, war hawks are actively trying to sabotage the talks before they start, and Israeli officials warn [[link removed]] that they are ramping up plans for military strikes on Iran.
Fortunately, there is an alternative. Negotiations on the Iran Nuclear Deal will resume next week, and if the parties can overcome their distrust and restore full compliance, a major crisis can be averted. Critically, ordinary Iranians would see immediate economic benefits from the lifting of sanctions.
We can’t afford to let war hawks like Ted Cruz undermine American security, devastate the people of Iran, and sabotage diplomatic pathways. NIAC has been at the forefront of the debate over diplomacy and organizing to prevent war. But we need your support to keep up the fight.
Can you contribute today to support our work preventing war with Iran? [[link removed]] Thank you,Ryan Costello
