Everyone should be able to learn from conversations about systemic discrimination. But information about these concepts isn’t always presented in an accessible way. Our new toolkit, Fighting for Fairness: it starts with you! is a first step to making these conversations accessible to all. We created it to support self-advocates with intellectual disabilities to participate in societal conversations about oppression and equity. This toolkit provides easy-to-understand explanations of societal discrimination and definitions of some words used to talk about different forms of oppression.
We are grateful to the self-advocates, including self-advocates of color, and anti-racism educators who worked with us to develop this toolkit. Fighting for Fairness is only a first step towards making these conversations accessible to everyone. More toolkits are in the works about specific systems of oppression such as racism, and especially on the intersection of racism and ableism.
The toolkit is available in Easy Read and plain language, and includes an accompanying discussion guide. You can find these materials here.
We hope you’ll use this toolkit and accompanying guide in your advocacy, and share it widely. As we work to combat all forms of oppression together, let’s ensure that conversations about equity are accessible to all of us!
