Friend,
Today three white men were found guilty of murder in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery.
We should never have to hold our breath for justice. While this verdict upholds the accountability we need, Ahmaud should be with us today. He should be home with his mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, who instead has one less seat at the table for the holidays.
The conviction of Gregory McMichael, Travis McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan Jr. is a critical step forward in demonstrating Black lives are valued and our presence is not a threat that can be met with violence. Ahmaud Arbery’s murder is one of many instances of gun violence that could have been prevented. His death is a tragedy that his family and the Brunswick, Georgia community will be forced to live with for decades to come. We send our condolences to the Arbery family and those affected by his death.
Black and brown communities are regularly traumatized and affected by these tragedies. We will continue to advocate for these communities, working to create policies that treat gun violence prevention as a public health crisis and speaking out in opposition to stand your ground laws that perpetuate violence.
We need your help to keep building power while centering communities of color to end gun violence. Together, we can continue the fight.
In solidarity,
Greg Jackson
