John,
Happy Thanksgiving! As the year winds down, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what we’re thankful for here at Democracy Docket.
We launched in March 2020, at the beginning of a pandemic, with one goal — to highlight the unprecedented threats to American democracy. We’re dedicated to covering voting rights, elections, redistricting and more. It all began with a weekly newsletter, and now we have seven full-time staff members, a growing platform and consistent reporting on the most critical issues of our time.
But, none of this would have been possible without you.
We’re thankful for supporters like you who engage with our work and share it with friends and family. We’re thankful for the elected officials, academics and advocates who have written for our Spotlight series [[link removed]] . We’re thankful for everyone across the country who fights for democracy in their own way — in Congress, in the courts, in the states and in local communities.
Thanks for your continued support.
Warm wishes,
Team Democracy Docket
This holiday weekend, here’s what we’re reading:
Thanksgiving is tomorrow, and that can mean spending time with relatives who hold very different political views from you. It’s a tradition almost as American as apple pie — arguing with your relatives about politics over turkey. If you find yourself unable to avoid political talk, we’ve got you covered. Read our latest, “Debunking Conservative Myths This Thanksgiving,” to equip yourself with the facts about voting and elections. [link removed]
Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to gather with family and friends, but it’s important not to over-romanticize the story of the first Thanksgiving. The legacy of harm towards Indigenous communities continues today, and in a recent Data Dive, we covered the systemic issues hindering the political participation of Alaskan Native and American Indian voters. However, these barriers can be mitigated through thoughtful policy and sufficient political will — learn about the Native American Voting Rights Act, which awaits action in the U.S. Senate. Next week, be on the lookout for Democracy Docket’s Giving Tuesday coverage on our social channels. In anticipation, here are a few voting organizations we’re thinking of and giving to:
