“Our main message today is the safety net worked,” said Joel. “The massive increase in federal food and massive increase in federal cash benefits for working people...dramatically softened the blow of hunger in New York City and the New York City metropolitan area.”

Thanks to Hunger Free America’s work successfully fighting for increased federal spending on the SNAP program and other food aid programs, food hardship in the New York Metropolitan Region dropped by 45 percent, between May 2020 and August 2021.
