Dear Evidence Action Supporter,

An estimated 600 million children around the world suffer from anemia, a condition that impairs physical and cognitive development and weakens the immune system. Anemia is typically caused by iron deficiency—the most common nutritional disorder in the world, and one that’s compounded in poor communities, where it’s the leading cause of disability among children aged 5-19.

That’s the bad news. The good news? There’s a solution – one that’s inexpensive, safe, and recommended by the WHO. Iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation has been shown to reduce the risk of anemia among children by 49%.

So the biggest challenge in the fight against iron deficiency anemia isn’t finding a treatment that works—it’s getting a highly effective treatment to those children who need it. Fortunately, we already have the platform to do this rapidly and cost-effectively—we can reach hundreds of millions of children by delivering treatment where they already are: at school.

In India—which carries 33% of the global anemia burden—we are working closely with education and health officials in five states to support the scale up of IFA supplementation for children and adolescents. If you think this sounds familiar, you’re right—we’ve been working with these same states (and many others) for several years through our Deworm the World Initiative, which also uses schools to effectively deliver treatment to millions of children.

By 2022, we estimate that 24.8 million children across these states will be receiving weekly IFA supplementation every year. By leveraging our already cost-effective deworming platform, these interventions are being delivered in India at a combined cost of USD $0.60 per child, per year. And now, with millions more children in need of regular treatment, we are exploring potential expansion of this program—both within India and in other geographies.

Your support can help us scale IFA supplementation further, reducing the global burden of anemia and the disability it causes.
