An election and redistricting update

John,
With all said and done, 39.29% of Washington voters participated in this year's general election. Thanks to your support, we won races by reminding voters that their vote matters. In the City of Renton, Carmen Rivera won by 618 votes. In the city of Sammamish, Karen Howe won by 156 votes. In the City of Vancouver, Kim Harless won by 41 votes. We are so proud of these candidates for pulling off close victories and for all the WCV-endorsed candidates across the state who won and who ran strong campaigns, starting important conversations in their communities.
This year, we had some very gratifying wins. We re-elected Eric LaBrant to the Vancouver Port Commission with 61.69% of the vote — he was a critical voice to stop the nation’s largest crude oil export terminal. We elected Diana Perez and Kim Harless to the Vancouver City Council, and they become the first women of color to serve on the Council in the city’s history. Danny Herrera was elected to the Yakima City Council to represent the community where he grew up. Linda Redmon was elected in the city of Snohomish and Melissa Duque in Mill Creek.
Now, we turn our attention to 2022. Unfortunately, the state Redistricting Commission failed to reach a consensus on our new Congressional and legislative district maps by November 15th. The process now turns to the State Supreme Court and could take until April.
We know that no matter what the final maps are, there will be new environmental champions to elect across the state and incumbents to defend who have taken tough votes for their communities. We are so honored to be doing this work with you and are confident in facing the challenges the next election brings.
Onward,
Lennon Bronsema
Chief Campaigns Officer
