John, It takes a uniquely awful person to do what Lauren Boebert did last week: stand on the House floor and—in the midst of debate about censuring one of her GOP colleagues who shared a video depicting him murdering a fellow Member of Congress and threatening the President of the United States—hurl ethnically-charged insults at a totally different Member of Congress, Ilhan Omar. Boebert used her limited time at the microphone on Wednesday to call Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Somali refugee, Muslim, and progressive fighter, a member of the “Jihad Squad”: There really is no way to fully explain what motivates someone like Boebert to say and do such disgusting and hateful things. But there is a sense in which it is, in fact, simple: hatred. Hate warps our empathy, channels complex emotions in simple ways, and requires less work and introspection than compassion and love. Hate is learned, and can be unlearned, but its proponents cannot be granted unlimited tolerance and respect. We must meet virulent, unmoored hatred firmly, swiftly, and without ambiguity. This is why we email so often asking you to step up as much as you can to fight back against hate-mongers like Lauren Boebert. She will not stop willingly, so we need to do everything we can, however little it may seem, to stop her ourselves: If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: Express Donate: $5 Express Donate: $15 Express Donate: $25 Express Donate: $50 Express Donate: $100 Or, donate another amount Thank you for pushing back against extremism, hate, and the racist anger we see from so many elected officials in the Republican Party today.
