Happy Thanksgiving, John! As you’re preparing to gather with your loved ones, we wanted to pause and say thank you. Because of your kindness and commitment to the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC), together, we have reunited families and provided them the stability they need to grow. And that’s something to be grateful for.

Because of you, Evelyn is finally able to marry her long-time partner and her family can stay together.

Evelyn is an NIJC client who came to the United States from Guatemala as a child, and was added as a dependent on her mother’s visa. Unfortunately, by the time her mother became a legal permanent resident, Evelyn was 21 years old and was too old to receive her own permanent residence.

To help Evelyn stay with her family, my team at NIJC helped her apply and renew her temporary status under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Permanent residents like Evelyn's mother can only apply for green cards for their unmarried children, so Evelyn couldn't marry her longtime partner without jeopardizing her ability to become a permanent resident. Especially after Evelyn had her daughters, she and her partner very much wanted to get married.

Finally, NIJC helped Evelyn apply for and secure her green card. Now, she and her partner can get married, and ensure their family stays together for many years to come.

We couldn't be more grateful that you support NIJC. By doing so, you have changed so many lives and provided protection and new opportunities to many people like Evelyn and her family.

Thank you – and happy Thanksgiving!

With gratitude,

Kate Ramos
