The Future of Sustainability: learning from the past to transform the future…

As global crises escalate, we are arriving at a pivotal moment for the sustainability movement.

We know that transformation is needed. In the latest edition of our Future of Sustainability thinking, we argue that getting to that transformation will require first looking back with humility and learning from the past.

Over the next few weeks we will be bringing you a wide diversity of views on the experience of the past 25 years and what we need to do now - from the leading European scientist on our planetary boundaries, a Singaporean futurist, an African stateswoman, an Indian youth activist, and from those who were at the forefront of coining business sustainability, way back at the start.

Join us on this fascinating journey as we explore where we’ve succeeded and where we’ve failed, and what it all means for the future. Take a look at our launch film.

How to transform for a thriving future: A Compass for Just and Regenerative Business

As the spotlight after COP26 shifts to ‘what’s next?’, business leadership will be critical in determining whether we will be successful in creating a world in which more than nine billion people can thrive within planetary boundaries.

Calls to reimagine conventional ‘sustainability’ strategy are getting louder and the next wave of sustainability will be centred around delivering a ‘just and regenerative’ future. But to date, there has been no clear guidance on what this means in practice; how businesses can make the case for change; or how leaders can galvanise their teams to make it happen.

In partnership with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and with input from businesses including Nestlé, Kimberly-Clark, Seventh Generation and Capgemini, Forum has published the 'A Compass for Just and Regenerative Business' report outlining the business imperative to shape a ‘just and regenerative’ future, defining what that means, and introducing a new ‘Business Transformation Compass’ to help leaders navigate change.

Accelerating the transition to regenerative agriculture in the USA

Regenerative agriculture has the potential to positively impact many of the world’s most pressing challenges: food security and nutrition, water and soil quality, biodiversity, and sustainable livelihoods.

The Growing our Future initiative – led by Forum and made possible with financial support from Walmart Foundation, VF Foundation and Nestlé – aims to build on the current momentum behind regenerative agriculture in the US by bringing the sector together around specific areas where effective and collaborative action can drive transformational change at pace and scale.

Having convened over 130 stakeholders from across the agriculture system over the past year, we have now kicked off three areas of work that have high potential for impact and require collective action: policy change; financing the transition to regenerative agriculture; and creating better pathways to market.

We are now inviting stakeholders from across the US agriculture system to join us in one or more of these workstreams.
