John,
As you read this, Amazon is trying to buy yet another piece of our democracy.
The company is pouring $1.5 million into this upcoming Tuesday's city council election in Seattle. The scale of Amazon's spending is extraordinary: it's reportedly contributed more money to the Chamber of Commerce's political action committee than the candidates have raised collectively through their own campaigns.
We see this for what it is: an unprecedented attempt by a wealthy corporation to control a city council.
It's enough.
Join us and sign the petition telling Amazon to keep its hands off our democracy!
Amazon's actions are part of an unnerving and growing pattern of involving itself in our ability to self-govern. Last year, Amazon bullied the Seattle City Council into stopping its efforts to tax large corporations--like Amazon--to fund solutions for the city's housing and homelessness crises. But Amazon didn't stop in Seattle.
Amazon tried to bully New York into giving it billions in tax breaks for a second headquarters (HQ2). When communities stood up and fought to ensure that New York devote that money to things New Yorkers need, Amazon packed up and decided not to build HQ2 in New York.
This isn't just about Seattle--it impacts all of us. If Amazon succeeds in its hostile takeover of the Seattle City Council, what's to stop it from using the same tactics in every city and state across the United States?
It's time to tell Amazon: you can't have a monopoly on our democracy!
In Solidarity,
Sam Nelson
