John,

On September 22, 1961, after months of protests and arrests of Freedom Riders on public transit, the Interstate Commerce Commission finally ordered the removal of “whites only” signs from interstate bus terminals throughout the South by November 1st of that year.

The ruling came after a diverse coalition of men, women, and people of all ages, united against segregationist hate and demanded equality.

As a member of Congress, I had the honor to serve with one of the original Freedom Riders, my friend, the late John Lewis. To honor his legacy, and that of all Freedom Riders, I introduced House Resolution 1348, to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the Freedom Riders in recognition of their unique contribution to Civil Rights, inspiring a revolutionary movement for equality in interstate travel.

60 years later, I recently gave remarks on this historic anniversary, and urged my colleagues to cosponsor this bill. You can watch that video here.

We remember,

Hank Johnson
