John,
Earlier this month, we asked you: How would lowering the cost of prescription drug prices benefit you or someone you know? Thousands of you shared your stories.
Your answers made it clear: While the pharmaceutical industry leverages a culture of corruption to increase profits, everyday Americans are suffering due to high drug prices. It’s cruel and shameful, John.
Here are a few of the responses we received:
“People I know have to choose between essentials and healthcare.” “As a treating physician, it would be beneficial to patients to have lower prescription costs. Otherwise these decisions could result in less than optimal treatment options.” “My best friend requires a medication that costs more than $14,000 a year. Medicare does not cover the medication and she cannot live without it.” “Pharma is way too greedy. Insulin and EpiPens cost way more than they should. They keep saying "funding our research," when actually they're funding CEOs and stockholders.” |
We heard from people who have been taking the same medication for decades, only for Big Pharma to increase the cost so much they could no longer afford it. We heard from those forced to choose between paying for their own medication or their child’s medication; from retired folks living on a fixed income; from people forgoing the medication they need so that they can put food on the table; and from people worried about their friends, family, and neighbors.
As Rep. Katie Porter puts it, “the Big Pharma fairy tale” is one where pharmaceutical companies claim to spend big on research and development to justify astronomical drug prices, while pulling in massive profits and lining their own pockets as Americans suffer.
The American people deserve better. We deserve leaders who will fight to hold Big Pharma accountable. That’s where Truth to Power candidates come in. Our endorsed candidates aren’t intimidated by corporate greed—and Truth to Power doesn’t take donations from pharmaceutical companies or their lobbyists.
Again, thank you to everyone who took the time to share your story with us. Your stories are what shape our organization and the things we value most.
Thank you,
Team Truth to Power
