FIRST → Ohio voters passed redistricting reforms TWICE since 2011.
THEN → In 2018, Governor DeWine ran on a campaign promise of a redistricting process that would “honor the voters’ wishes.”
NOW → After being complicit in passing legislative maps that he wished were “more constitutional” Governor DeWine also signed a gerrymandered congressional map into law.

Ohio’s governor just flip-flopped on a now empty campaign promise by caving to Republicans who want to manipulate electoral lines to secure wins. But the fight for fair maps isn’t over in Ohio!

As a clear partisan gerrymander, the map he signed violates the redistricting reform amendment in the Ohio Constitution that 75% of voters supported in 2018. That’s why the National Redistricting Action Fund (NRAF) is supporting voters in a legal challenge to the map before the Ohio Supreme Court.

The goal of the lawsuit is to have the Court declare the gerrymandered map unconstitutional and to make sure that the map Ohio uses in 2022 is actually fair and that it follows state law.

When the congressional map was passed, A.G. Holder said: “This egregious power grab has led to a map that is heavily manipulated in favor of Republicans, takes away the voting power of communities of color, and splits apart areas that should be kept together… Ignoring state law simply so Republicans can gerrymander themselves into power is anti-democratic -- and Ohioans deserve better.”

The All On The Line community in Ohio has led the way -- helping voters navigate an obstructive process even as map manipulators drafted the map in secret, missed deadlines, and made the public input process burdensome on those looking to engage. Nationally, this movement will continue to do everything possible to achieve fair maps through a transparent redistricting process in key states. But conservative politicians have proven they’re still capable of ignoring the demands of the public.
