This email is about a very powerful person whose name you may not hear a lot.
Jerome Powell has been running the Federal Reserve (a.k.a. “the Fed”) — which Congress established after a series of financial panics in the early 1900s to stabilize our economy — since Donald Trump put him in charge of it four years ago.
- One of the Fed’s primary responsibilities is to reduce the risk of financial crises.
- But Powell has failed to properly carry out the Fed’s oversight of Big Banks.
- And he has done almost nothing to direct the Fed’s considerable influence toward mitigating the financial risks of global warming, even though catastrophic climate change poses a massive threat to financial stability.
While Powell has helped steer the economy through the challenge of the coronavirus pandemic, we can do better than the person Donald Trump put in charge of the Fed.
We need to make sure the Senate does not confirm this Trump-appointed Republican to run an entity as powerful as the Fed for another four years.
Tell the Senate:
The American people deserve a Fed chair who recognizes the importance of regulating Big Banks and of mitigating the financial risks of catastrophic climate change. Do not confirm Jerome Powell for a second term as chairman of the Federal Reserve.
Add your name.
Thanks for taking action.
