Truthsgiving: Philanthropy in Action

Every November, we celebrate Native American Heritage Month. What we call Thanksgiving is a powerful opportunity to honor Native culture, history, achievements. This year, WFN Member Gina Jackson, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Return to the Heart Foundation and WFN Board Member, discusses philanthropy's role in honoring truth and action in this featured guest blog.

As a leader of an Indigenous Women-led organization empowering and amplifying Indigenous sisters focused on healing, narrative change, climate justice, civic engagement, restorative and regenerative development – Gina uplifts native people today, and every day – not just during November.

"As Native innovators, activists, artists, and entrepreneurs build power, communities become stronger. By supporting womxn leaders in their communities, healing occurs individually, collectively and beyond. We must recognize and honor Native Womxn for their role in shaping and strengthening our communities.

As we approach Thanksgiving and #GivingTuesday, we’re celebrating the many ways our members leverage the power of philanthropy to strengthen and advance the intersectional feminist movement for equality and justice for all."
– Gina Jackson, Co-Founder and Co-CEO, Return to the Heart Foundation

This year was hard.
Make a difference.
Give to your women’s funds.

2021 was devastating for many women around the globe: a continuing childcare crisis; more than 500 new restrictions of abortion rights; and a “she-cession” where 2.3 million women in the U.S. alone left the labor force due to the pandemic.

Despite the scope of the problem, charitable giving to nonprofits dedicated to supporting women and girls increased by only a fraction over the past year – and even still is only 1.9% of all charitable contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations.

You can help us do more. This #GivingTuesday (November 30), join us by giving generously to your local women’s fund and if you can, also support our network so we can amplify the power of your gift.

#FundWomensFunds and #DoGood for women and girls.

Throughout Latin America, machismo culture teaches men, and women, that women are property, less than human, deserve abuse and punishment, and have no inherent rights. Impunity has been and continues to be, in most cases, a given. Movimiento Manuela Ramos, a partner of Donor Direct Action in Peru, has been fighting this deeply entrenched cultural attitude on all fronts since they were founded more than forty years ago, in 1978.  To learn more, watch the video.

Women-led Climate Justice. In preparation for COP26, the SRHR and Climate Justice Coalition—co-convened by the Women’s Environment & Development Organization (WEDO), Women Deliver, and Ipas—joined the Women and Gender Constituency to produce a brief entitled, “Climate Justice and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights.”

From November 9-11, more than 2,000 of people joined Pro Mujer’s second annual Gender Lens Investing Forum (GLI) Forum LATAM to discuss how gender lens investing can catalyze gender equality and create more inclusive economies in Latin America. Throughout the event, entrepreneurs, investors and other industry leaders participated in workshops and panels to generate solutions for social challenges, rethink the financial system and find opportunities for collaboration to advance gender lens investing in Latin America.
