It’s been 84 days since the Supreme Court has allowed S.B.8, a law that bans abortions around six weeks into a pregnancy, to remain in effect in Texas. And yesterday, the Supreme Court was supposed to issue an opinion on the constitutionality of S.B.8 — but instead, they ruled on a case regarding a dispute over interstate groundwater in Tennessee.
John, this isn’t an exaggeration: Every day the Supreme Court holds off on an S.B.8 ruling, more Texans are forced to cross state lines to secure and access their constitutional rights. Even more, Texas’ S.B.8 law is setting a dangerous precedent for the state of abortion rights across the country. Just recently, it was reported that Ohio conservatives are pushing to pass a bill that would make abortion at any stage of pregnancy illegal using the framework behind S.B.8 as inspiration.
At this moment, when our reproductive freedom is under constant attack from the far-right, Congress must make codifying Roe v. Wade a priority and secure the right to abortion care under federal law. But considering Henry Cuellar’s lengthy history of aligning himself with the anti-choice lobby, we can’t trust him to do what’s right for South Texans and our nation.
