It’s true, John. When you hear about a massive oil spill that causes untold damage to our environment and local tourism, it’s almost certain that the company responsible only got a slap on the wrist.
It’s true, John. When you hear about a massive oil spill that causes untold damage to our environment and local tourism, it’s almost certain that the company responsible only got a slap on the wrist.
Fossil fuel companies are not paying even a fraction of what they should be for the oil spills that they cause. SEEC members in Congress are working to fix that.
SEEC Members Rep. Ted Lieu, Rep. Julia Brownley, Rep. Katie Porter, Rep. Alan Lowenthal and Rep. Mike Levin introduced the Increasing Penalties for Offshore Polluters Act, which would remove penalty caps and double all fines and prison time for those responsible at fossil fuel companies.
“For decades, the oil and gas industry has continued to pollute and dirty our oceans and shorelines with little to no consequences or incentives to stop,” said SEEC member Rep. Julia Brownley. “It is time we stop these corporations from repeated pollution violations.”
A little over a month ago, a devastating oil spill occurred in Southern California, but the polluters walked away with little more than a slap on the wrist. This bill would crack down on polluter abuse and take a much tougher line on those who spoil our natural treasures.
SEEC Member Rep. Katie Porter says it better than we ever could: “Polluters have a long history of buying influence in Washington to get policies that benefit them at the expense of our planet and the rest of us. Enough is enough with Big Oil’s sweetheart deals embedded in our mining laws.”
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
