In a few weeks, California will finalize new congressional maps, so let me be the first to tell you what this means for our race.

• Based on the drafts we have seen, I’ll need to introduce myself to tens of thousands of new voters between now and next June — just 6 months away.
• Last cycle, I faced a Donald Trump-style Republican who raised over $4.2 million in an attempt to defeat me.
• And with right-wing media launching a coordinated campaign of attack to discredit me, and by extension our attempts to hold Trump accountable for his abuses, they are sure to target me again.

Plain and simple, we need your support to win in June. And it’s not going to be easy. We need to prepare for a tough race in a national environment where the GOP is breaking fundraising records that could very well put the House Majority within Kevin McCarthy’s grasp.

If you’re wondering why California isn’t rolling out partisan redistricting maps like many other Red states, let me explain. Because it’s vital to understand why your support is so imperative.

California’s Prop. 11 in 2008 created the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, which drew new maps for every district in 2011 for the very first time. It’s a model for states across the country.

But in 2011, that model led to Republicans pouring in millions of dollars, seeing a once-in-a-decade opportunity to beat Democrats — as some of us were forced to run against each other, introduce ourselves to new voters, or deplete our campaign accounts fighting back against Republican attacks.

With Donald Trump and Fox News constantly attacking me and our work, that places a massive target on me and our campaign. Right-wing mega-donors are eager to funnel money to any candidate willing to trample our democracy if it serves their interests.

And now that I know I’ll most likely be facing numerous opponents, we don’t have the luxury to sit and wait to prepare for next November.

We have to prepare to respond to the TV and radio ads attacking my character, the attack mailers with false smears, and the lies and conspiracy theories that were the calling card of my last GOP opponent — tactics my next opponent is sure to repeat.

I’ll never stop defending our democracy, and this election is crucial to that effort. It’s why Trump’s cronies are determined to remove me from office — and from standing in their way.
