Dear John,

As you read this, Amazon is trying to buy another piece of our democracy.

The company is pouring $1.5 million into this Tuesday’s Seattle city council election. The scale of Amazon’s spending is extraordinary. Amazon has reportedly contributed more money to the Chamber of Commerce’s PAC than the candidates the Chamber opposes have raised collectively with their own campaigns.

We see this for what it is: an unprecedented attempt by a wealthy corporation to control a city council.

This is part of a pattern. In 2018, Amazon used bullying tactics to stop the Seattle City Council from taxing large corporations to fund solutions for the city’s housing and homelessness crisis. Then they tried to bully NY into giving them billions in tax breaks. When communities fought to devote that money to things New Yorkers need instead, Amazon decided not to locate a second headquarters there.

This isn't just about Seattle. If Amazon succeeds in its hostile takeover, they may use the same tactics in your city and your state.

It's time to tell Amazon: you can’t have a monopoly on our democracy!
