Each year Tom Jones, senior media writer and author of our flagship daily newsletter The Poynter Report ([link removed]) , asks our colleagues to share what they are thankful for in the media world.
Responses ([link removed]) this year included attention to workers' rights, investments in local media and moments of levity. I'll add our Poynter alumni community! I often hear directly from you with questions, suggestions, compliments and personal news. It's a highlight of my workday.
But it's not every day that an alum creates a scholarship to give back to the Poynter community. Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Media (2022)

Now in its eighth year, the Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Media has transformed the careers of more than 450 women in news media and tech. During a week often described as overflowing with “Poynter magic,” each participant learns to manage teams more effectively, hone and communicate their strategic vision and steer their organizations toward success. But perhaps more importantly, graduates join a global community of support.
Topics for 2022 include trauma-informed leadership, navigating burnout, DEI in hiring and retention, ethical decision-making for leaders, work-life chemistry and delegating.

Leadership Academy for Diversity in Media (2022)
In-person: Oct. 9-14, 2022
The Leadership Academy for Diversity in Media is a transformative, tuition-free leadership program that trains journalists of color working in digital media to thrive, professionally and personally.


In partnership with The Washington Post, the Poynter Institute is looking for the next 30 journalists of color to participate in its sixth academy. This group will join a network of 150+ graduates ([link removed]) who regularly describe their experience as “life-changing.”
The program structure and curriculum also provide participants the connections, confidence and skills to confront their challenges. Sessions are designed fresh each year to respond to industry trends, participant needs and evolving management challenges. Underscoring everything is Poynter’s expertise in leadership training and The Post’s expertise in digital innovation.

Covering Jails and Police Reform
Online and in-person: Jan. 20-21, 2022
This free workshop will help journalists more confidently cover America’s criminal justice system, from learning about COVID-19 inside jails to proposed changes in local policing. Accepted applicants can attend either online or in-person at Poynter’s waterfront campus in sunny St. Petersburg, Florida.
Throughout the entire program, Poynter faculty will lead robust discussions around journalism ethics when it comes to how we cover the accused and convicted.
