Dear John,

Like many women embroiled in the criminal legal system, Susan Brown has endured abuse, violence, and emotional trauma. While Susan was pregnant, she was attacked by her former partner. In a move to protect herself and her unborn child, she struck back in self-defense.

Her attempt to protect herself and her family led to a life without parole sentence, which she’s serving at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti, MI.

The Sentencing Project is committed to giving people like Susan a second look at their extreme sentences and confronting racial and gender injustices that perpetuate the cycle of trauma and discrimination.

Despite everything she’s encountered in her life, she says, “If I’m ever given a chance to live back in society, I would live my life as a healed, loving, devoted woman to show—not just my children, but the world—what you can do through circumstances that I found myself in. “

Will you give a donation so we can advance second look legislation in Michigan to help people like Susan?

From now through #GivingTuesday, November 30, you can triple your impact. All donations received will be matched by the Greenbridge Foundation up to $25,000. Help us earn this match today and fight for a more fair and effective criminal legal system.
