Child Defender,
Thanksgiving is a time to come together, to appreciate, and to hear from those we love. Whether you're gathering in person or connecting with loved ones across many miles this Thanksgiving, I invite you to listen to the children.
Last month, communities across the country kicked off a year of action in the name of our country's young people during our 30th annual National Observance of Children's Sabbaths, for which the theme was "Where Does It Hurt?": Listening to Heal Our Children. One of the actions we asked participants to consider was hosting regular "Family Suppers." We've seen that bringing together diverse groups of community members for a meal and to hear from each other about problems facing our children can lead to powerful conversations--and commitment to pursuing powerful, community-based solutions.
In that spirit, as you connect with loved ones this holiday season, possibly over a meal, be sure to listen to the children. By truly listening to young people, we affirm their agency in ways that will put us on a path to creating the country our children deserve.
Wishing you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving and many blessings this holiday season.
For our children,
Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson
President and CEO
