Who will Governor Dunleavy unlawfully punish next for making decisions that contradict his personal beliefs?

Dear ACLU Supporter,

Join us in defending Alaska's liberties on Tuesday, November 5, at 2 p.m., in front of the Boney Courthouse. Immediately following the rally, we will be in court fighting to restore funding to the Alaska Court System, which Governor Michael Dunleavy unlawfully punished for Alaska Supreme Court's rulings that were at odds with Governor Dunleavy's personal and political beliefs.

While the $334,700 veto from the Alaska Court System's budget was an abuse of power by the governor that attacks the state's deep commitment to an independent judiciary, violates Alaska's constitutional separation of powers, and illegally attempts to reallocate budget appropriations, it also attacks women's rights, reproductive rights, and low-income Alaskans.

What will be threatened next? LGBTQ+ rights? Workers' rights? Alaskans have cause for concern, as the precedent set by this case could hurt all of us.

"Governor Dunleavy openly assaulted the constitutional power of the judiciary, and blatantly attempted to use money to coerce judges into making decisions that align with his own political beliefs," said ACLU of Alaska Executive Director Joshua Decker. "His job is to serve Alaskans and uphold the Constitution, not to strongarm judges into making unlawful decisions that are in-line with his personal beliefs. When Alaskans' rights are on the line, judges should be weighing the law, not the chance of budget cuts from the governor. Alaskans deserve better, we deserve justice."

We hope you'll stand with us on Tuesday, November 5, at 2 p.m. in solidarity and to help us defend the rights of the courts, the vulnerable, women, the LGBTQ+ community, and every Alaskan.
