Hello,

This week's edition will discuss the reality of anxiety, theories of meaning within human life, and signs of coming betrayal.

The Reality of Anxiety

Anxiety isn't just an unpleasant psychological state. You're revved up, and you're burning resources like mad.

"I don't know where I am" means everything around you is relevant, and you have to ramp up your capacity for action to deal with that. People do not like that.

We structure almost all of our environments constantly so that never happens. We're all dressed the same, with tiny variations, and we all follow the same traffic laws, for example. We do everything we can to make sure that we know exactly where we are and what we're doing all the time.

That's because when we're in that state, we can advance cautiously using positive things and maintain a modicum of positive emotion. That's what we're trying to do.

Monday Reflections

"In order to be able to think, you have to risk being offensive." (Share this on Twitter)

"The better ambitions have to do with the development of character and ability, rather than status and power. Status you can lose. You carry character with you wherever you go, and it allows you to prevail against adversity." (Share this on Twitter)

"Always place your becoming above your current being." (Share this on Twitter)

This Week On The Podcast

The Four Horsemen of Meaning | The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast - S4E59:  Bishop Barron, John Vervaeke, and Jonathan Pageau

This episode was recorded on September 10th, 2021.

Jordan Peterson, Bishop Barron, John Vervaeke, and Jonathan Pageau have a round table to share and explore ideas and theories of meaning within human life and endeavors.

All three guests have been on the podcast before, and all share Jordan’s passion in uncovering the universal truth of human experience. This deep discussion explores the roots of meaning and religious significance.

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson:

“It isn't obvious to me that we see objects—we see patterns"

Jon Vervaeke:

“We're using meaning as a metaphor... something similar to the way a sentence works. It has intelligibility to it that connects us to the world so that we can interact and be informed by it”

Bishop Robert Barron:

“We're using meaning as a metaphor... something similar to the way a sentence works. It has intelligibility to it that connects us to the world so that we can interact and be informed by it”

Jonathan Pageau:

“The reason we perceive hierarchy is because we are always judging, or trying to evaluate whether something’s good"

Never Ignore Small Signs of Coming Betrayal | Jordan B. Peterson

Dr. Peterson:

"Virtually every time someone gets flipped upside down because of a betrayal in a relationship after the betrayal happens they say to themselves, 'There were all these signs I didn’t pay attention to.’

So maybe the first sign is your partner starts to flirt a bit more when you go out on a social occasion and it’s not a lot more — just a bit more. And you decide because maybe you’re timid that that’s okay, you’re not going to do anything about it. But it’s interesting that it happens — it grabs your attention and it means something but what you decide is, it’s not worth paying attention to.

The next eight times that you go out, the same thing happens but it happens at a somewhat accelerated rate. And then maybe the person starts to go without you and so on. There’s this progression towards the end state of betrayal.

Every time you get a little hint, the world tells you that something’s going on, you put it aside and you fail to take it into account. Well, you’re forgoing your opportunity to adjust the relationship at the micro stage. Maybe what you should have done the first time that happened is you should have gone home with your partner and said, ‘What the hell is going on?’ "
