Folks,
When I announced my campaign, I knew we were going to be in for a tough challenge. Here was an openly gay, ordained minister stepping forward to run against one of the most extreme Republicans in Congress. I heard things like, “Are you sure people will vote for someone like you?” and “You’ll never win in the South.”
But here’s how I see it: There will always be skeptics telling you why you can’t do tough things or why new approaches will never work. And that’s okay, as long as we don’t let that stop us from doing the right thing.
It actually motivates me more, because I want to show what’s possible. That’s how we won marriage equality in North Carolina and Mississippi through our organizing work across the South. And it’s how I’ve won two terms as county commissioner.
I know how to take on a challenge, and I know how to win -- and right now, winning is only possible with your help. Will you chip in $25 today to help our team bring love, hope, and empathy to NC-14?

What I have learned over the years is that you take on a tough challenge one step at a time, by focusing on the fundamentals, by building a movement of people working together, and by taking calculated risks.
Whether it’s organizing online to meet young people or going to communities where Democrats haven’t been seen much, we have to find people where they are. Where people are, this campaign will go and bring our message of hope, love, and empathy. Because in a race this close, we can’t afford to leave a single vote on the table.
To do all this, it’s critical we continue hitting the goals we set for ours. With your support, I know we can do this.
That’s why I’m asking if you’ll chip in $25 or more today to help us reach our end-of-month goal? Because when we work together to create a seat at the table for everyone, there’s nothing we can’t do.
