Worker Organizations' Vital Role in Democracy
------------------------------------------------------------
An official side event of the Summit for Democracy
Tuesday, December 7, 2021
8 a.m. to 10 a.m, EST

Workers' ability to freely participate in society--to form unions, collectively bargain, peacefully gather in public spaces and have a voice in decisions that affect their workplaces and communities--are the bedrock of democracy. Ensuring these basic freedoms is needed now more than ever.

Please save the date for a high-level dialogue, “Worker Organizations’ Vital Role in Democracy,” on Tuesday, December 7 at 8 a.m., EST, in advance of President Biden’s Summit for Democracy ([link removed]) on December 9 and 10.

This event is the culmination of four listening sessions featuring union leaders from Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe, who highlighted challenges facing labor unions and provided recommendations for commitments and action on worker rights around the world. In conjunction with the Summit for Democracy, the event will feature remarks from ministers of labor, union leaders and other global worker rights leaders, including U.S. Secretary of Labor Martin J. Walsh and AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler.

This high-level dialogue and the regional listening sessions are co-sponsored by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of international Labor Affairs; the Department of State’s Office of International Labor Affairs within the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor; the U.S. Agency for International Development; the International Trade Union Confederation; the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO); and the Solidarity Center.
Simultaneous interpretation will take place in Arabic, Russian and Spanish.

Save the date and watch for more details!
