Even while flying across the country more days than not, Derek has remained active in our community. In the midst of his relentless work on COVID recovery, he remains focused on keeping our region’s economy moving forward, strengthening the middle class, and protecting our region’s rich natural heritage. Together, Derek and Emily will shine a light on what's at stake in 2022.
Though we’re extra excited to be joined by history-maker Stella Keating. While Stella was shopping with her mom at Ikea, she received a call from Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois. He asked her to join him in the Senate Judiciary Committee and testify on behalf of Equality Act, legislation that would protect LGBTQ people with federal protection from discrimination in housing, health care, education, employment, and other areas of life. With her brave testimony, she made history as the first trans person ever to testify before the United States Senate.
Here’s a powerful excerpt from her important testimony:
“Every young person, every person, regardless of who they are or who they love should be excited about their future. I have big goals for mine— in addition to becoming a civil rights attorney, I’m determined to run for public office. I represent America’s future. We’re the next generation of small business owners, software engineers, scientists, teachers, nurses…presidents.”
