Dear John:

As you get ready to spend time with family (chosen, found, and otherwise) and friends, we want to take a moment to say how thankful we are for all of you. Each week, we share ways for you to connect in service of our shared desire to create an equitable and inclusive world, and each week folks respond in service of Support, Education, and Advocacy across all 50 states.

However you show up, we are grateful to have you as part of OUR PFLAG family. Thank you for all that you do.

To the Future, with Love Streaming Now on PBS POV

We're proud to support To the Future, with Love, a short animated film from filmmaker Shaleece Haas (Real Boy, Texas Strong), which is now available on the PBS series POV Shorts.

The seven-minute animated film centers on Hunter “Pixel” Jimenez, a trans teen caught between loyalty to his Guatemalan immigrant family and his dreams of living “happy and gay” with his long-distance boyfriend.

To watch on TV, check your local PBS listings. Or visit pbs.org/video/to-the-future-with-love-ivgkro/ to watch the film online--streaming now!

Three Steps to Being a Better Ally During the Holidays

Thanksgiving is coming this week, and our LGBTQ+ loved ones often need even more ally support when the holidays roll around. Here are ways to take action.

  1. Learn: Take a look at this Yahoo! article about coming out during the holidays, featuring PFLAG National’s Director for Learning and Inclusion, Jean-Marie Navetta. PFLAG also has several blogs to check out, including How To “Ally” for the Holidays, Going Home For the Holidays… Or Any Days, and Straight For Equality: Allies and the Holidays.
  2. Watch: Representation matters, and LGBTQ+ people finally have some holiday movies that represent them. Watch Happiest Season on Hulu, The Christmas Setup on Lifetime, and The Christmas House on Hallmark Channel. Use these movies as great family conversation starters!
  3. Share: The holidays can be a very isolating time of year for some, even when we’re not in the midst of a global pandemic. Use social media to share details about supportive virtual spaces (like your chapter’s PFLAG Connects meetings!), crisis intervention hotlines, and LGBTQ+ inclusive 12-step meetings.

Advocacy

Tell your Senators: Support the Equality Act

Later this week, many Senators will take a recess for Thanksgiving, with some of them returning to their home states, safe in the knowledge that they and their families are protected from discrimination.

But many of them will return to states where their own constituents-- including LGBTQ+ people, women, people of color, and people of minority faiths--won’t have those same protections. That’s why we need you to join us in contacting your Senators about why you support the Equality Act.

There are only 21 states (and our nation’s capital) where everyone is protected from discrimination. Please take a moment today to make a call on behalf of equality everywhere, for everyone, at all times!

Something to Talk About...Live!

We'll be enjoying time with our families this Thursday, and won't have a live show. But we'll be back next week with a FANTASTIC episode that you won't want to miss.

In the meantime, it's a great opportunity to go back and watch some of the 80+ episodes we've produced in the last 18 months.

You can find every episode--and all of the articles and questions--at straightforequality.org/discussionseries!

Remember: We're here to help. Find us all at pflag.org/about/our-people.

Let’s stay safe, stay healthy--and stay connected.

We're here for you,
Team PFLAG National
