According to new data released last week, Texas still has the 9th highest teen birth rate in the nation, and the highest overall count of teen birth. In 2020, a baby was born to a teen mother once every 23 minutes. However, the teen birth rate continued its steady decline in Texas and nationwide.
The National Center for Health Statistics released 2020 birth data this week showing 22,641 births to Texas teen mothers, a decline of about 1,500 from the year prior. The Texas teen birth rate dropped 7%, from about 24 to 22 per 1,000. The US teen birth rate declined even faster, by 8%, and is now 15 per 1,000.
However, Texas once again has the highest overall rate of repeat teen births. In 2020, 17% of teen births were to teens who already had at least one baby. Though teen parents are the medical consenters for their baby, Texas state law does not allow teen parents to consent to their own contraception.
Since most babies born in 2020 were conceived before March, the 2020 data don't reflect the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Demographers expect to see large drops in birth rates in 2021.
