Hi John — This summer we received an email from a mom that has been stuck in my head ever since. It’s not just what Jackie wrote about her queer child that resonated, it’s how she wrote it. "I can't emphasize enough what a difference the It Gets Better Project has made to my child. Especially in the early hours of the morning when they felt so alone and different from all of their peers. Bullying and ostracising were occurring on a daily basis and school was not a safe place to be. Like a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, my child happened upon your website. When they watched all of the articulate, successful, happy people telling them it would get better, it was like discovering a secret friend who had their back. Many nights were spent on the website laughing, crying, and being inspired by the people who shared their stories. The feeling of belonging that my child receives from your organization cannot be overstated — it continues to be a 'lifeline.'" Many of us know what it’s like to feel “alone," "different" and in need of a friend. Or, we've watched LGBTQ+ kids struggle and wanted to find something — anything — that might help. For more than a decade, the It Gets Better Project has been a lifeline to countless young people all over the world. Our work saves lives because we reach LGBTQ+ youth before they’re in crisis. If the fireman is there to put out the blaze, consider us the fire drill. We help kids navigate what is often a confusing and scary journey. We can’t guarantee it will be perfect, but we can absolutely make it better. The world doesn’t always get better for LGBTQ+ young people in a linear way. Two steps forward, one step back — that’s how the path toward progress works. But making it better for queer youth is about making them better too. Better equipped to feel empowered when others try to tear them down. Confident in the knowledge that their journey is their unique story to experience — that they are valid and worthy of happiness. It Gets Better because people like you help us make it better. Thanks for your support!
