John,New research is making it clear climate change has a direct and lasting impact on the education of millions of girls each year.

According to a Malala Fund research study, climate change will disrupt the education of four million girls this year—and that number will triple as the earth gets hotter.

The study does not hold back on the grim future that potentially awaits millions of girls worldwide.

If current climate trends continue, climate change will prevent at least 12.5 million girls across the globe from completing their education each year, starting in 2025.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has identified natural disasters and climate-induced migration as significant factors in increased levels of violence against women and girls. Child marriage and increased household responsibilities for girls are also factors.

It is estimated 80 percent of water for households is collected by women and girls globally. According to UNICEF, women are forced to travel long distances under harsh conditions when water is scarce.

In Ethiopia, for example, about 20 percent of girls miss school to collect water compared with five percent of boys.

A Malala Fund researcher sums it up this way:

“When governments take climate action, it helps girls stay in school, and when they provide gender-equal education, it improves the health of our planet.”
