Dear Reader,
As we know, the pandemic prompted the biggest disruption to American schooling in generations. Millions of children were forced to learn from home, even though tens of thousands lacked devices, internet access or even reliable electricity. Educators struggled to keep the attention of the kids who could get online, and worried about those who went missing. Many people gave up on college, and applications and enrollment dipped, especially among people of color.
We told you all about it, via the work we do here at The Hechinger Report ([link removed]) . Our reporting, story-telling, and data investigations illuminated how some schools and higher education institutions managed well, even amid the chaos, finding effective ways to help educators and students cope and change education for the better, long term. We highlighted the deepening childcare crisis, the plague of crumbling schools, and spotlighted solutions for returning to school and what we’ve learned from the lockdown via a collaboration with five other newsrooms.
The tiny details and big picture analysis we fold into each story can take weeks, sometimes months, of careful research, in-person interviews, school visits and data collection. And it has become more challenging amidst pandemic precautions and restrictions.
Donations like yours help sustain our newsroom and make up a growing portion of our budget, allowing us to do more expansive reporting on early childhood, K-12 and higher education. And our budget now relies on reader support — this year we need to raise $65,000 from readers like you to enable our reporting to continue, unaffected by the financial pressures that surround us.
